AAC & Assistive Communication Technology

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. In plain terms: any tool that helps a person communicate when speech alone isn’t enough — from picture boards to tablet apps and devices that “talk.”

A big worry parents have: will a device stop my child from talking? The opposite is usually true — research and our own experience show that AAC often supports spoken language while giving your child a way to be understood right now. One CCL family got their 3-year-old set up with a talker, and they practice the device and verbal speech together.

We help you figure out the right fit, get set up, and actually use it day to day — and we coach families so the device becomes part of real life, not something that sits on a shelf. For more complex setups, we can also bring in an assistive technology consultant.

Will using a device stop my child from learning to talk?

No. For most children AAC supports speech development and reduces frustration. We use the device and work on verbal speech together.

My child is non-speaking. Where do we even start?

With a free consult. We’ll talk about your child and what options make sense, then guide you through trials and setup.

Can funding help pay for a device?

Often, yes — through FSCD, Jordan’s Principle, or other programs. We can help you navigate this and write supporting proposals.
