Stuttering Therapy for Young Children

If your 3–6 year old is repeating sounds or words, getting “stuck,” or seems frustrated when talking, you’re right to look into it. Some bumps in speech are a normal part of learning to talk — but for some children, early support makes a real difference, and the preschool years are an ideal time.

At CCL we help young children who stutter speak more easily and, just as importantly, feel okay about talking. We work gently — never pressuring a child to “slow down” or “try again” in ways that add stress — and we coach you on what helps (and what to avoid) at home.

Is stuttering normal for a 3-year-old?

Some disfluency is common as language explodes around this age. But if it’s lasting more than a few months, increasing, running in the family, or your child is getting frustrated, it’s worth an assessment.

Should we just wait and see?

Sometimes waiting is fine — but the only way to know is to check. The preschool years are the most effective window for stuttering therapy, so it’s better to ask than to wonder.

Will pointing out the stutter make it worse?

We coach families on responses that reduce pressure. A free consult is a good place to start.
