My Child Is Hard To Understand

If you (or other people) often can’t understand what your child is saying, it’s worth getting it checked. As a rough guide, strangers can usually understand about half of a 2-year-old’s speech and most of a 3-year-old’s. If your child is harder to understand than that, or is getting frustrated, an assessment is a good idea.

Being hard to understand can have several causes — a speech sound delay, apraxia, or other reasons — and they’re treated differently. An assessment pinpoints the cause so therapy targets the right thing instead of guessing.

At what age should I worry about clarity?

If a stranger can’t understand most of your child’s speech by around age 3, it’s worth assessing — and you can check earlier if you’re concerned.

Could being hard to understand just be a phase?

It can improve on its own, but it can also be a sign of something treatable. A quick consult is the easiest way to know.

What if it turns out to be nothing?

Then you’ll have peace of mind — and we’ll tell you honestly if therapy isn’t needed.
